Women’s Tennis Knocks Off Fredonia, 5-0, in SUNYAC Quarterfinals

Match Results

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The quest for the State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team's fifth State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title and its first since 2010 began on Friday at the Binghamton Tennis Center, as the Hawks passed their first test by beating SUNY Fredonia, 5-0, in the SUNYAC Tournament quarterfinals.

With the victory, New Paltz, which is now 8-2 overall, will play SUNY Oneonta in the semifinal round tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. Fredonia drops to 5-7 overall and plays The College at Brockport tomorrow at 8 a.m. in a consolation match.

New Paltz, the SUNYAC East Division's No. 1 seed, made quick work of Fredonia, the SUNYAC West Division's No. 4 seed. After the Hawks swept through doubles action, they lost just two sets total across all six singles flights, and four of them were left unfinished due to New Paltz clinching the match win.

The No. 1 doubles team of seniors Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) took down their Blue Devil counterparts, 8-2, while the No. 2 doubles tandem of sophomore Veronika Paikin (North Woodmere, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) and freshman Sara O'Brien (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) downed their opponents, 8-2. Freshmen Brittany Grandville (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) had the most decisive win in doubles action, as they posted an 8-0 triumph.

Tyson registered a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 singles, while Schmidt clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles. Junior Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) and sophomore Liz Palmer (Woodstock, N.Y./Cazenovia) had their opponents on the ropes at flights five and six of singles, respectively, when the match ended; each of them held a 6-0, 5-0 lead over their opponent.
