BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team defeated SUNY Oneonta 5-0 in the 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) semifinals on Saturday afternoon at the Binghamton Tennis Center.
The Hawks, now 9-2 overall, will take on SUNY Geneseo in the championship match on Sunday at 10 a.m. The Knights defeated SUNY Cortland 5-0 in the other semifinal contest earlier today to move to 9-0 overall. This marks the ninth-consecutive season that New Paltz and Geneseo will meet in the title match as the Hawks look for their first championship since 2010.
In doubles, senior co-captains
Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and
Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) defeated senior Brynn Sussman and junior Michelle Spencer at flight one in a close match, 9-7. Schmidt and Tracy improve to 4-0 at flight one doubles.
Sophomore
Veronika Paikin (North Woodmere, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) and freshman
Sara O'Brien (Orangeburg, N.Y./Albertus Magnus) took flight two honors, 8-1, over senior Kelly Gochan and junior Emily Denney, to improve to 4-0 at flight two. The freshman duo of
Brittany Grandville (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and
Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) won flight three, 8-1, against sophomore Chris Santasiero and freshman Keri Picciochi, to move to 4-0 at number three.
The Hawks won the only two singles matches completed as Paikin defeated Spencer at flight three in straight sets to improve to 6-0 at number three. Junior
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) earned the flight six win, also in straight sets against Santasiero, to improve to 7-0 at number six this year.
The Hawks and Geneseo met up earlier in the regular season on Sept. 12 in New Paltz, with the Knights prevailing 7-2. The Hawks earned two singles victories that day as Paikin posted a flight three win and Tyson recorded a flight five victory.
