Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team closed out its 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) schedule in grand fashion, defeating Morrisville State College, 10-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Old Turf Field.
The Hawks finish conference play with a 4-2 mark in SUNYAC games and have locked up the No. 3 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament. New Paltz will face second-seeded SUNY Oneonta in the semifinal round on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Oneonta's All College Field.
New Paltz rises to 10-5 overall with the win and visits the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday, Oct. 22, for a 5 p.m. non-conference tilt. Morrisville drops to 2-11 overall and 0-5 in the SUNYAC with the loss, with a Tuesday, Oct. 21, encounter against Oneonta serving as the Mustangs' final conference contest of the year.
The Hawks dominated all facets of the game, finishing with a 51-2 edge in shots and a 19-1 cushion in penalty corners. New Paltz scored four goals in the first half before breaking out for a six-goal second half.
It wound up being a historic day for freshman forward
Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville), as she scored four goals on seven shots. O'Reilly's four goals are the second-most scored in a single game in program history. Freshman forward
Sam Eberle (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) netted her first three career goals to record a hat trick, making her and O'Reilly the second pair of New Paltz players to notch at least three goals each in a single game in program history. Junior forward/midfielder
Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) and senior forward
Alex Gallo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson) each had a marker, while junior back
Jessica Caruana (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) scored on a penalty stroke in the second half.
Freshman midfielder
Hayley Kim (West Hurley, N.Y./Onteora) and Caruana each finished with two assists, while Ackerman and junior back
Sarah Sansone (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) each had a helper.
Junior goalkeeper
Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) played the first 25:09 of the contest and earned the win, while freshman goalkeeper
Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) saw 44:51 of action and made one stop. Freshman goalkeeper Kaitlyn Baker turned aside 16 shots in the loss for Morrisville State.
