Field Hockey Drops 4-1 Decision to Rowan

Box Score

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. - In its second-to-last game of the regular season, the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team was unable to overcome a 2-0 deficit that came just 5:59 into the contest, as the Hawks fell, 4-1, to non-conference Rowan University on a rainy Wednesday afternoon at the Old Turf Field.

Rowan reached the scoreboard early, as sophomore forward Jenna Pressler tipped in a feed from senior midfielder Karlee Henderson in the first minute. Just five minutes later, junior forward Sam Browne made it a 2-0 game, as she scored off her own rebound. Those two quick strikes wound up being the difference in the contest, as the Hawks were only able to cash in on one of 11 shots on goal.

New Paltz drops to 11-6 overall and closes out the regular season on Saturday, Nov. 1, with a 1 p.m. home game against non-conference Vassar College. Rowan rises to 13-3 and extends its winning streak to 10 with the win. The Profs' final home game of the regular season will occur on Saturday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. against The College of New Jersey.

The Profs took a 3-0 lead into the halftime intermission, as senior back Jenna O'Sullivan scored on a ball from junior forward Sam Browne in the 29th minute. After 15 minutes of scoreless action to start the second half, senior forward Allison DiMenna tacked on one more goal for Rowan, as she received a pass from Pressler and found the back of the cage with it. Junior forward/midfielder Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) broke up the shutout bid in the 59th minute, directing a pass from sophomore forward Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) into the goal. Despite a few offensive opportunities down the stretch, New Paltz was unable to draw any closer.

Rowan held a 23-17 margin in shots on the contest, while New Paltz owned a 10-8 edge in penalty corners.

Junior goalkeeper Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) made 10 saves in the loss for the Hawks, while her counterpart, freshman Carly DeMarco, turned aside eight shots. Browne and senior back Erika Mecchella each notched a defensive save for Rowan.
