Field Hockey Back to Winning Ways with 3-1 Victory over Brockport

Box Score

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team got back into the win column against The College at Brockport in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) game Friday afternoon at Kennedy Shriver Stadium, as the Hawks topped the Golden Eagles, 3-1.

New Paltz held the upper hand throughout the course of the contest, finishing with a 28-6 edge in shots and a 17-2 margin in penalty corners. The Hawks scored two goals in the first half and tacked on a third in the 42nd minute, while the Golden Eagles rattled the back of the cage in the 64th minute to break up the shutout bid.

New Paltz rises to 6-4 overall (2-1 SUNYAC) and visits SUNY Geneseo tomorrow for a 1 p.m. conference game. Brockport drops to 3-8 overall (2-1 SUNYAC) and hosts SUNY Oneonta tomorrow at 1 p.m.

The Hawks showed their ability to score off of corners that was seen early in the season, as they scored in the seventh minute off a penalty corner. Senior midfielder Deirdre O'Neill (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) inserted the ball to junior forward/midfielder Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East), who fired off a ball that was knocked in by O'Neill for the first goal of the game.

Just 2:42 before the half, freshman forward Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) buried an unassisted goal, giving New Paltz a 2-0 lead heading into the intermission.

O'Reilly found the back of the cage again in the 42nd minute, cashing in on a rebound off a shot by Ackerman. New Paltz backed off the offensive pressure after that score, and Brockport received some of its best scoring chances of the afternoon with less than 10 minutes remaining. Freshman forward Amy Masciale broke up the shutout in the 64th minute, but New Paltz prevented Brockport from getting off a shot in the waning minutes of the tilt and emerged victorious.

Junior goalkeeper Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) turned aside three shots in the winning effort, while sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Farrell made 16 stops in the loss.
