EWING, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team held No. 4 The College of New Jersey scoreless in the first half of an NCAA Division III Tournament second-round game at Lions Stadium Saturday, but the Hawks were unable to hold on in a 4-0 loss to the Lions.

New Paltz sees its season end at 15-7 overall after a year in which it won its third straight State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship and made its third straight NCAA Tournament appearance. TCNJ, the automatic qualifier out of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), rises to 20-1 and faces either the Catholic University of America or Messiah College in the national quarterfinals tomorrow at 1 p.m. at Lions Field.

The Hawks, who qualified for the tournament by means of the automatic bid from the SUNYAC, actually outgained TCNJ, 4-2, in penalty corners in the first half and had two in the final minute of the first period. The Lions were able to extinguish both scoring chances, and the teams entered the halftime intermission scoreless.

New Paltz had the momentum early in the second half, with senior forward Emily Vanacore (Shokan, N.Y./Onteora) putting a shot on goal in the 38th minute, while freshman forward Sam Eberle (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) missed a shot wide of the frame 15 seconds later. From that point forward, the Lions seized the tempo of the game.

TCNJ reached the scoreboard in the 50th minute, as senior forward/midfielder Lindsey Hatch rattled the back of the cage unassisted. Less than three minutes later, sophomore forward/midfielder Danielle Andreula scored off a feed from Hatch, and Hatch struck once again with her 31st goal of the season in the 58th minute, giving TCNJ a 3-0 lead. Senior forward Erin Healy tipped in a shot from sophomore back Lexi Smith in the 59th minute to round out TCNJ's scoring.

The Lions finished with a 21-7 edge in shots and a 9-5 cushion in penalty corners.

Junior goalkeeper Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) turned aside 10 shots in the loss, while her counterpart, sophomore Kelly Schlupp, made three saves in the shutout victory.
