Women’s Swimming Finishes Third at NYU Invitational

NEW YORK – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team finished third out of four teams with 659 points following the second and final day of the NYU Invitational on Saturday in Manhattan.

Host New York University won the meet with 1,064 points, while the Stevens Institute of Technology placed second with 836 points. Arcadia University finished fourth with 277 points.

New Paltz competes in its first dual meet of 2014-15 on Saturday, Nov. 15, as it visits SUNY Oswego for a 1 p.m. contest.

Junior Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central) paced the Hawks with two top-five finishes on Saturday, as she took second in the 200 freestyle (1:58.41) and fifth in the 100 freestyle (55.10). Senior Samantha Granan (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) was the Hawks' top breaststroker of the day, finishing fifth in the 200 breaststroke (2:35.10) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:10.22), while junior Kim Kallansrude (Muttontown, N.Y./Jericho) placed fifth in the 200 butterfly (2:17.91) and seventh in the 400 individual medley (5:00.23).

Sophomore Ann Fici (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) claimed fifth in the 1,650 freestyle (19:03.54) and eighth in the 400 individual medley (5:08.42), while junior Krista VerMeersch (Newark, N.Y./Newark) claimed seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:36.97) and 10th in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.37). Freshman Megan Joseph (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) and junior Maggie Heaton (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) rounded out the Hawks who posted two top-10 finishes on the afternoon. Joseph took sixth in the 200 breaststroke (2:35.48) and ninth in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.33), while Heaton placed eighth in the 100 butterfly (1:02.33) and 10th in the 200 butterfly (2:22.06).

In addition, freshman Molly McCulloch (Rome, N.Y./Holland Patent) finished fifth in the 100 butterfly (1:01.32), senior Rachael Cummings (North Attleboro, Mass./North Attleboro) placed sixth in the 1,650 freestyle (19:57.77) and junior Casey O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield) ranked eighth in the 200 backstroke (2:17.13).

The Hawks' 200 medley relay team of Griger, Granan, McCulloch and VerMeersch combined for a second-place performance of 1:53.21, while the 800 freestyle relay squad of Griger, Joseph, junior Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and O'Connor (8:15.41) and the 400 freestyle relay contingent of Joseph, McCulloch, O'Connor and Griger each finished third.
