Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) placed second in the 500 freestyle with a school-record and NCAA "B" cut time of 4:58.01, as the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team wrapped up day one of the 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Athletic Center in third place out of nine teams with 138 points.
Allocco's swim eclipsed the former program standard of 5:00.26, which she set last year at the SUNYAC Championships.
Action continues at the meet tomorrow, with the preliminary heats going off at 10 a.m. and the championship final heats set for 6 p.m.
The Hawks kicked off the session with a 1:38.53 in the 200 freestyle relay, as the foursome of junior
Samantha Granan (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt), sophomore
Krista VerMeersch (Newark, N.Y./Newark), sophomore
Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) and senior
Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) placed fourth.
Beyond Allocco in the 500 freestyle, freshman
Ann Fici (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) took eighth (5:20.80), while junior
Kat Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) and senior
Niki Ghostlaw (New Windsor, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) took 11th (5:16.42) and 14th (5:24.88), respectively.
In the 200 individual medley, Granan fired off a fourth-place 2:10.85, while sophomore
Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central) placed sixth with a time of 2:11.77. In the consolation final, sophomore
Maggie Heaton (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) took 16th (2:16.42).
Scalise claimed seventh in the 50 freestyle with a 24.74 mark, serving as the lone Hawk to swim in the evening session in the event.
The 400 medley relay squad of Scalise, Granan, Heaton and Griger closed out the session with a fourth-place finish (3:59.77).
SUNY Geneseo leads the day-one team standings with 270 points, while SUNY Cortland sits in second with 190 points. SUNY Fredonia (fourth, 136 points), SUNY Oneonta (fifth, 119 points), The College at Brockport (sixth, 108 points), Buffalo State (seventh, 58 points), SUNY Oswego (eighth, 54 points) and SUNY Potsdam (ninth, 52 points) round out the remainder of the field.
