Women's Swimming Sits in Third Place after Day 2 of SUNYACs

BUFFALO – Junior Samantha Granan (Hyde Park, N.Y./Franklin D. Roosevelt) posted a time under the program record in the 100 breaststroke twice, and the State University of New York at New Paltz women's swimming team wrapped up day two at the 2014 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships in third place out of nine teams with 308 points. The meet is being hosted at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Athletic Center in downtown Buffalo.
 
Granan lowered Becky Baker's former standard of 1:05.87 that she set in 2011 with a 1:05.78 performance in the preliminary heats. She then clocked a second-place 1:05.68 during the championship final to improve upon her morning performance. Granan also met NCAA provisional qualification in the event.
 
Action concludes at the meet tomorrow, with prelims beginning at 10 a.m. and finals starting at 6 p.m.
 
Senior Chelsea Allocco (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) became just the second woman to win four SUNYAC titles in the 400 individual medley, as she pulled away during the back half of her race to chart a first-place and NCAA "B" cut time of 4:30.86 in the event.
 
New Paltz started the evening session with a 1:50.52 performance in the 200 medley relay, as the foursome of sophomore Casey O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn./New Fairfield), Granan, sophomore Maggie Heaton (New Milford, Conn./New Milford) and sophomore Ella Graffin (Ithaca, N.Y./Ithaca) placed fifth overall.
 
Beyond Allocco in the 400 individual medley, senior Ali Smoak (Gansevoort, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) and freshman Ann Fici (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge) placed 13th (4:53.37) and 15th (4:53.83), respectively.
 
In the 100 butterfly, Heaton and Graffin went 1-2 in the consolation final, placing ninth (1:00.53) and 10th (1:01.04) overall, respectively. Smoak posted a 16th-place time of 1:02.04 as well.
 
The 200 freestyle saw sophomore Cassidy Griger (Cooperstown, N.Y./Cooperstown Central) and senior Victoria Scalise (Rochester, N.Y./Brighton) place third (1:54.49) and fourth (1:55.22), respectively, while junior Kat Buyes (Wappingers Falls, N.Y./John Jay) took 13th (1:59.95).
 
Sophomore Krista VerMeersch (Newark, N.Y./Newark) charted a 12th-place standard of 1:11.04 in the 100 breaststroke in addition to Granan's second-place finish in the event.
 
In the 100 backstroke, O'Connor took 10th (1:03.17), while sophomore Zoe Papetti (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach) came in 16th (1:05.79).
 
Finally, in the 800 freestyle relay, the foursome of Allocco, Griger, Buyes and Scalise took second with a time of 7:48.36.
 
After two days of competition, SUNY Geneseo leads the pack with 582 points, while SUNY Cortland is second with 392 points. SUNY Oneonta (fourth, 282 points), SUNY Fredonia (fifth, 246 points), The College at Brockport (sixth, 225 points), SUNY Oswego (seventh, 131 points), Buffalo State (eighth, 121 points) and SUNY Potsdam (ninth, 103 points) round out the remainder of the field.
