NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The No. 1 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team will travel to Elmira College to compete in the last United Volleyball Conference (UVC) Crossover of the season this weekend from Saturday-Sunday, March 8-9. First, the Hawks will face Penn State Behrend on Saturday at 9 a.m. before challenging Medaille College at 1 p.m. On Sunday, New Paltz will compete against Hilbert College at 3 p.m. for the team's final game of the crossover.
RECORDS: New Paltz enters the weekend with a record of 17-2, 5-1 UVC… Penn State Behrend is 9-4, 4-3, while Medaille is 5-6, 4-3, and Hilbert owns a mark of 4-18, 0-6.
SCOUTING THE NEW PALTZ HAWKS (17-2, 5-1): New Paltz hosted Vassar College and Dominican (Ill.) University in a home tri-match on Sunday, March 2… The Hawks finished the day undefeated, beating Vassar, 3-1 (25-18, 21-25, 25-10, 25-21), before sweeping Dominican (Ill.), 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-18)… In the win against Vassar, sophomore outside hitter
Tim Ferriter and junior setter
John Lutjen led the Hawk offense with 10 kills each… Sophomore setter
Christian Smith dished out 29 assists to go along with Lutjen's 22... Ferriter impacted the defense as well, coming up with seven digs, and freshman middle blocker
C.J. Borfitz added six total blocks… New Paltz came out strong against Dominican (Ill.) behind Ferriter's match-high 11 kills…Lutjen and Smith chipped in 22 and 17 assists, respectively, while senior libero
Victor Tuminelli came up with a team-high six digs… Freshman middle blocker
Steven Woessner added three service aces and five total blocks.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: Ferriter leads the team and ranks fifth in the conference in kills per set (3.72)… He has knocked down double-digit kills in all but three of the matches in which he has played in with 212 total kills for the season… Smith has dished out double-digit assists in the team's last 12 matches, only dipping to single digits in one match, while Lutjen has kept up double-digit assists for a streak of 14 matches… Woessner leads the team and ranks third in the UVC in service aces, averaging 0.45 per set… Tuminelli rounds up the conference's top-10 in digs with 2.17 per set.
TEAM STATISTICS: Offensively, New Paltz rules the conference statistical categories, placing first in hitting percentage (0.307), assists per set (12.06), kills per set (13.03) and service aces per set (1.78)…. The team also ranks first in Division III in hitting percentage, kills per set and assists per set.
SCOUTING THE LIONS (9-4, 4-3): Penn State Behrend is coming off a big weekend after winning a pair of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) matches on Saturday, March 1, first beating Hilbert College and then Penn State Altoona… In the 3-1 win against Hilbert, senior outside hitter Grant Kocher knocked down a season-high 20 kills while also adding six digs and three blocks…Senior outside hitter Nathan Steele and sophomore middle hitter Josh Oertly also had double-digit kills with 14 and 10, respectively… In the nightcap, Steele contributed 16 kills and Kocher added 13… Junior outside hitter Ty Sheehan came up with 16 digs, nine kills, two assists and one ace.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: Steele and sophomore middle hitter Kevin Smith both rank among the top-10 in the conference in hitting percentage with averages of .359 and .341, respectively… Oertley leads the team and is sixth in the UVC in blocks per set, and freshman outside hitter Antonio Vazquez is ranked No. 1 in the conference in service aces, averaging 0.51 per set.
TEAM STATISTICS: The Lions lead the conference in digs per set, averaging 10.83, while ranking second with 2.52 blocks per set… They are the fourth and fifth best teams in the conference in service aces (1.40) and hitting percentage (.244), respectively.
LAST MEETING: New Paltz handed the Lions a 3-0 (25-18, 26-24, 27-24) loss last season on March 9, 2013 in a home UVC Crossover match.

SCOUTING THE MAVERICKS (5-6, 4-3): Medaille grabbed a 3-1 win against Penn State Behrend on February 26… Senior right side Trevor Barrett led the team with 16 kills, while junior middle blocker Jordan James contributed 13... Junior setter David Riggsby dished out 52 assists.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: Barrett leads the team and ranks second in the conference averaging 4.11 kills per set, while Riggsby ranks sixth in the UVC with 8.84 assists per set… Jack Hagerty and Nate Schneider rank among the conference's top-10 in blocks and digs with 0.97 and 2.21, respectively.
TEAM STATISTICS: Medaille ranks among the conference's top-five teams in multiple categories… The Mavericks are ranked third in kills per set (12.56) and assists per set (11.3) while ranking fourth in digs per set (10.10) and fifth in blocks per set (2.17).
LAST MEETING: Then-No. 6 New Paltz swept then-No. 12 Medaille College in the quarterfinals of the 2013 UVC Tournament, 3-0 (25-20, 25-17, 25-19), in Rochester, N.Y., on April 13, 2013.

SCOUTING THE HILBERT HAWKS (4-18, 0-6): Hilbert is coming off of two losses from March 2… The Hawks were handed a loss by Penn State Altoona but not without a good team effort, as senior outside hitter Adam Weaver finished with eight kills while sophomore outside hitter Korey Schwab and freshman middle hitter Andrew Wolbert each added five each… Freshman setter Adam Heftka dished out 21 assists, and junior right side David Mellerski led the team with 10 digs…. In the loss against Penn State Behrend, Weaver led the Hawks, as he knocked down 21 kills, while Heftka handed out 39 assists and junior libero Ryan Ratajczak added 12 digs.
STATISTICAL LEADERS: Weaver is the team and conference leader in kills… He averages 4.78 per set and has knocked down a total of 373 so far this season… Ratajczak is the top ranked back-row defender in the UVC, averaging 2.99 digs per set and coming up with a total of 233 in the 78 sets in which he has played.
TEAM STATISTICS: Hilbert ranks eighth in the conference in digs per set with 9.44 and 10th in the UVC in hitting percentage (0.133), kills per set (9.35), assists per set (8.83) and blocks per set (1.20).
LAST MEETING: New Paltz took down Hilbert, 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-20), on March 10, 2013 during a UVC Crossover match at the Hawk Center last season.
