Strong Singles Play Leads Women’s Tennis to 6-3 Win over Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team overcame a 2-1 deficit through doubles play to come away with a 6-3 non-conference victory over the Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday afternoon.
 
New Paltz rises to 11-7 with the win and next faces Ithaca College on Saturday, April 12, at 1 p.m. at the North Tennis Courts. Stevens finishes out its 2013-14 campaign at 8-8 overall.
 
The Ducks won by identical scores of 8-3 at flights one and three of doubles, while the Hawks' doubles tandem of junior Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and freshman Veronika Paikin (North Woodmere, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) prevented a Stevens sweep heading into singles with an 8-3 triumph at flight two.
 
In singles play, Stevens won at flight one, while senior Paige Munroe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Ann Arbor Pioneer), Schmidt, Paikin, sophomore Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) and sophomore Allie Starke (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) prevailed at flights two through six, respectively.
