Women’s Cross Country Opens at Stevens Two-Miler

WEEHAWKEN, N.J. – In the first competition of the 2014 season, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's cross country team defeated Stevens Institute of Technology 18 to 37 on Friday night at Weehawken Waterfront Park.
 
Senior Gabby Mancuso (New Paltz, NY/New Paltz) won the 3200 meter run with her time of 11:34.45, nearly ten seconds faster than the next finisher, classmate Terisa Woych (Kingston, NY/Kingston) (11:43.70).
 
Senior Maggie Verspoor (Sayville, NY/Sayville) took home third-place honors with her time of 11:50.23, followed by sophomore Rebecca Verrone (Maspeth, NY/Archbishop Molloy) (11:57.32), junior Danielle Halikias (Budd Lake, NJ/Mount Olive) (12:23.68), junior Robyn Schaefer (Sayville, NY/Sayville) (12:26.63) and sophomore Taryn Colon (Suffern, NY/Suffern) (12:38.81), who all finished in the top ten of the event.
 
25 runners for both New Paltz and Stevens participated in the first home cross country meet at Stevens in four years.
 
The Hawks will compete in the Vassar Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 6. Last season the men and women both captured the team title at the event. Terisa Woych placed second at the meet.
