OSWEGO, N.Y. – In its 2014-15 fall season opener, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team blanked host SUNY Oswego, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon.
New Paltz moves to 1-0 on the season and plays in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) pool play from Friday-Sunday, Sept. 5-7, at SUNY Cortland. Oswego drops to 0-2 on the year and will host Wells College on Friday, Sept. 5.
The Hawks received a flight one singles victory from sophomore
Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington), who defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1. Freshman
Brittany Grandville (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) won flight two singles with a score of 6-2, 6-0 in her first collegiate singles match.
Sophomore
Veronika Paikin (North Woodmere, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) was victorious at flight three singles, defeating her opponent 6-0, 6-1. Senior co-captain
Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) took home the flight four singles victory, notching the 6-0, 6-0 win.
Freshman
Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) won at flight five singles, 6-0,6-0 and classmate
Sara O'Brien (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) won 6-0, 6-1 at number six singles.
The combination of Schmidt and Paikin won at flight one doubles, 8-2. O'Brien and senior co-captain
Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) won at flight two doubles, 8-1. Ammirati and Grandville took home flight three doubles with an 8-2 victory.
