NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – After suffering its first defeat of the season on Friday to SUNY Geneseo, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team bounced back with a 9-0 win over visiting The College at Brockport on Saturday morning at the North Tennis Courts.
The Hawks improve to 5-1 on the year and will play at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 1 p.m. The Golden Eagles fall to 4-2 and host Roberts Wesleyan University at 4 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 18.
New Paltz started the day with three wins in doubles action as senior co-captain
Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and sophomore
Veronika Paikin (North Woodmere, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) defeated their opponents, 8-4, at flight one. Senior co-captain
Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) and freshman
Sara O'Brien (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) took flight two honors, winning 8-2. Newcomer
Brittany Grandville (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and junior
Allie Starke (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) were victorious at flight three, 8-1.
In singles action, sophomore
Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) won at flight one 6-2, 6-0, over Rachel Lamont. Grandville was the victor at flight two 6-0, 6-0, against Lauren Bohman. Paikin took home flight three with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Natasha Hale.
Freshman
Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) defeated Sam Malak at flight four, 6-1, 6-0, and O'Brien won flight five, 6-1, 6-0, against Elizabeth O'Rourke. Finally, junior
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) was the winner at flight six, 6-1, 6-0, versus Meghan Storie.
