TROY, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team dropped a close 5-4 match at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday afternoon at Sharp Courts.
After the defeat, the Hawks fall to 5-2 on the season and competes in the Vassar Scramble Tournament tomorrow at 9 a.m. RPI picks up its first dual-match win of the fall and competes in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Tournament at William Smith College in Geneva, N.Y., from Sept. 27-29.
The Engineers swept New Paltz in double competition, but the Hawks picked up four victories in singles play. Sophomore
Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) earned a tough-fought flight one victory, defeating her opponent Casey Olson, 6-4, 6-7, 7-5.

Veronika Paikin (North Woodmere, N.Y./George W. Hewlett) was victorious at flight three singles, beating Amanda Alexander 6-0, 6-1. Freshman
Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) remained undefeated in singles play this year with her flight five win against Pooja Ganesh, 2-6, 6-1, 6-3. Finally, junior
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) earned a flight six win versus Emily Aaldenberg, 6-2, 6-4.
