Box Score WAYNE, N.J. – Three different student-athletes scored and junior goalkeeper
Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) kept a clean sheet for the second game in a row, as the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team pinned a 3-0 setback on host William Paterson University on Wednesday evening in non-conference action.
The Hawks took a 2-0 lead into the intermission thanks to first-half goals from sophomore forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) and senior forward
Alex Gallo (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Hendrick Hudson), but the Pioneers upped the pressure in the second half, forcing Wageman to make five stops in the final 35 minutes of play to preserve the shutout.
New Paltz moves to 2-0 overall and next hosts Utica College on Saturday, Sept. 6, at 1 p.m. William Paterson drops to 0-2 and visits Bryn Mawr College on Saturday at 1 p.m. as well.
McKeveny opened scoring in the 19th minute, dribbling to the center of the circle and backhanding the ball into the cage from around three yards out. Gallo made it a two-goal game at 28:50, knocking the ball into the left-hand side of the goal.
William Paterson came out of the break firing, challenging the Hawk defense numerous times and gaining three penalty-corner opportunities. Wageman and the stout defense in front of her, however, kept the Pioneers off the board during that 20-minute stretch, and junior forward/midfielder
Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) put the game out of reach in the 56th minute with her third goal of the season.
New Paltz outgained William Paterson in shots (18-7) and penalty corners (13-4), while the Pioneers held an 8-6 edge in saves.
Wageman's five-save effort was good for the victory, with junior back
Sarah Sansone (New City, N.Y./Clarkstown South) making one defensive save. Junior goalkeeper Meg Davies played the first 35 minutes in goal for William Paterson and made five saves, while freshman goalkeeper Courtney Ross took over in between the posts for the final 35 minutes of play and made three stops.
