CORTLAND, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team defeated SUNY Oneonta 7-2 on Saturday in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Eastern Division action.
The Hawks (3-0) wrap up pool play with SUNY Plattsburgh tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. Oneonta (1-1) hosts the College at Brockport on Friday, Sept. 12 at 4 p.m.
With a win over the Cardinals, New Paltz will clinch the number one seed in the SUNYAC playoffs Oct. 10-11.
New Paltz won two out of three doubles matches against the Red Dragons. Senior co-captain
Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) and junior
Allie Starke (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) won at flight one, 8-4. Sophomore
Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and freshman
Brittany Grandville (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) took flight three, 8-4.
In singles action, Grandville defeated her opponent at flight two, 6-0, 6-3. Schmidt picked up a win at flight three, 6-2, 6-1. Freshman
Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) won at number four, 6-0, 3-0 (retired). Classmate
Sara O'Brien (Orangeburg, N.Y./Tappan Zee) was victorious at flight five, 6-3, 6-1 and junior
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) wrapped up the day with a 6-0, 6-0 win at flight six.
