BINGHAMTON, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team punched its ticket to the final round of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament after defeating The College at Brockport, 5-0, in the semifinals.
The Hawks improve to 6-2 overall and look for their first conference title since 2010 when they face off against reigning SUNYAC Champion SUNY Geneseo in the title match tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. Geneseo defeated SUNY Oneonta, 5-0, earlier today to move to 10-0 overall. This marks the tenth-consecutive season that New Paltz and Geneseo will meet in the championship match.
In doubles, sophomores
Brittany Grandville (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and
Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) defeated seniors Dilara Kumbul and Natasha Hale, 8-1, in flight one. In flight two, senior co-captain
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Govenor Livingston) and junior
Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) were victorious as they defeated opponents junior Elizabeth O'Rourke and senior Iyanna Sinclair 8-0. Junior duo
Maryann Badura (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) and
Liz Palmer (Woodstock, N.Y./Cazenovia) won flight three, 8-1, against freshman Kelsey Shanahan and junior Sam Malak.
The Hawks won the two completed singles matches to claim the victory. Grandville defeated Kumbul, 6-2, 6-0 at flight two while Tyson earned the win at flight three, 6-0, 6-1, defeating Malak.
