With the win, New Paltz now leads Oneonta, 5-0, in the 2015-16 Catskill Cup standings.
New Paltz dominated the majority of the contest, finishing with a 23-4 margin in shots and a 15-3 edge in penalty corners. After holding just a 1-0 lead at the half, the Hawks erupted for three scores in the second period to seal the victory.
Senior back
Jessica Caruana (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) contributed in every facet of the game, finishing with a goal, an assist and a defensive save. Caruana now has 27 career assists, adding to her program-record total that she achieved against The College at Brockport on Oct. 2.
New Paltz rises to 11-3 overall (4-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next visits Morrisville State College on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 5:30 p.m. Oneonta drops to 4-8 overall (2-3 SUNYAC) with the loss and next hosts Hamilton College tomorrow at 4 p.m.
After scoreless play for most of the first half, the Hawks drew a foul that warranted a penalty stroke in the 30th minute, and Caruana cashed in on that chance, rattling the back of the cage for her eighth goal of the season.
Oneonta had a one-minute stretch in the opening minutes of the second period where it threatened to score, putting three shots on goal while earning two penalty corners. That wound up being the Red Dragons' lone legitimate scoring push the entire game, as they took just one more shot the remainder of the contest.
Junior forward
Erin Landy (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) scored in the 53rd minute off a long Caruana pass from the midfield, and less than three minutes later, sophomore forward
Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) knocked in a pass from junior forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) off of a penalty corner. Finally, in the 61st minute, senior midfielder
Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) took a feed from sophomore midfielder
Hayley Kim (West Hurley, N.Y./Onteora) off a penalty-corner insertion and found the back of the cage to spell the final score of 4-0.
