Box Score MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team wrapped up State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play with a 5-0 win over Morrisville State College on Saturday evening at Drake Field.
Junior forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) netted a hat trick, marking a single-game career-high. It also is tied for the fourth-most goals scored in a single game in program history.
The Hawks have locked up the No. 2 seed in the SUNYAC Tournament and will host a semifinal-round game on Wednesday, Nov. 4, against the No. 3 seed. With a few games left to play among other playoff contenders, New Paltz does not yet know its semifinal-round opponent. SUNY Cortland won the regular-season title and clinched the No. 1 seed. The highest-remaining seed will host the SUNYAC Tournament final on Saturday, Nov. 7.
New Paltz rises to 12-3 overall (5-1 SUNYAC) with the win and next hosts the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m. Morrisville State falls to 2-12 overall (0-5 SUNYAC) with the loss and visits SUNY Oneonta next on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 4 p.m.
McKeveny opened scoring in the seventh minute, as she struck a pass from senior back
Jessica Caruana (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) into the goal from inside of five yards. Despite taking 28 shots in the opening period, New Paltz led just 1-0 at the half.
McKeveny struck again in the 44th minute, scoring unassisted, before sophomore forward
Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, N.Y./Sayville) found the back of the cage off of a rebounded shot in the 52nd minute. McKeveny completed the hat trick in the 55th minute, while freshman forward
Rachel McLaughlin (Cazenovia, N.Y./Cazenovia) knocked a pass from freshman midfielder/back
Jill Eggers (High Falls, N.Y./Rondout Valley) into the goal in the 63rd minute to round out the scoring.
New Paltz dominated the stat sheet, finishing with a 51-7 margin in shots and a 12-1 edge in penalty corners.
Senior goalkeeper
Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) made two saves in 63:59 of action for the Hawks before sophomore goalkeeper
Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, Pa./Nazareth Area) played the final 6:01 without facing a single shot on goal. Morrisville State's sophomore goalkeeper Liz Leva turned aside 26 shots in the loss.
