Box Score NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The No. 19 State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team remained undefeated at home this season, as the Hawks downed the Stevens Institute of Technology, 4-1, on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference contest at the North Turf Field.
New Paltz dominated almost every facet of the game, finishing with a 24-6 advantage in shots and a 16-6 margin in penalty corners. After the Ducks bounced back with an early goal in the second half following a relatively quiet first period, the Hawks scored twice more to add insurance to their lead.
New Paltz rises to 10-2 overall with the win and next visits No. 7 William Smith College on Saturday, Oct. 10, at 12 p.m. Stevens drops to 7-5 with the loss and next visits Nazareth College on Saturday at 12 p.m.
The Hawks struck first in the 16th minute, as junior forward
Erin Landy (Glenmont, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) scored amongst traffic in the circle. Less than five minutes later, junior forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) cashed in on a penalty corner, using passes from sophomore midfielder
Hayley Kim (West Hurley, N.Y./Onteora) and senior midfielder
Dani Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y./Smithtown East) to make it a 2-0 game. That wound up being the halftime margin, as New Paltz finished the first half with a 13-2 cushion in shots and dominated possession for most of the period.
The Ducks wasted little time in answering early on in the second half, as junior midfielder Nolie Prouty scored unassisted 1:05 into the new period to cut the visitors' deficit in half. With New Paltz regrouping after a timeout, the Hawks eventually got back on the board when senior back
Jessica Caruana (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) converted a penalty-stroke opportunity in the 44th minute. Caruana rounded out the scoring for the contest when she lifted a Kim pass off a penalty corner insertion into the top right-hand side of the goal in the 49th minute.
With Ackerman's assist, she pushes her career point total to 92, which is now just three shy of the program record (95) set by Danielle Conklin from 2010-13.
Senior goalkeeper
Alayna Wageman (Getzville, N.Y./Williamsville North) earned the win in between the posts, making three saves, while her counterpart, junior goalkeeper Emily Stukenborg, made 14 stops in the loss. Junior back
