Field Hockey Faces Cortland in SUNYAC Final

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The 2015 State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) championship will be on the line Saturday, Nov. 7, as the No. 2 seed State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team will look to win its fourth-straight SUNYAC title on the road against the No. 1 seed SUNY Cortland in the SUNYAC Tournament final. 

RECORDS: New Paltz is 14-5 with a 6-1 record against SUNYAC opponents this season, with their one loss coming against Cortland… Cortland is 14-4 with a perfect 7-0 record against SUNYAC opponents, and Cortland has won its last four matches… The Hawks defeated the Red Dragons in the 2012 and 2013 SUNYAC title games.

HOW THE HAWKS ADVANCED: The Hawks advanced to their fourth straight SUNYAC title game by defeating No. 3 seed SUNY Geneseo, 2-1, on Wednesday, Nov. 4… This was the third-year in a row that the Hawks eliminated the Knights from the SUNYAC Tournament… The Hawks entered the second half down 1-0 after Knights sophomore midfielder/forward Diana Ruggiero scored a goal at the 32:19 mark… Junior Colleen Roemer tied up the game at the 53:22 mark with her first goal of the season… Less than three minutes later, senior back Jessica Caruana gave the Hawks the lead with a penalty-stroke goal, her ninth marker of the season… New Paltz outshot Geneseo, 27-10, and held a 16-7 shots-on-goal advantage… Roemer and freshman midfielder/back Maggie Cottrell both had defensive saves in the victory… Senior goalkeeper Alayna Wageman made four stops.

STATISTICAL LEADERS: Six Hawks have double-digit point totals on the season… Junior forward Kayla McKeveny is tops with 27, which is also tied for second in the conference… Caruana is right behind her with 25… Freshman forward Rachel McLaughlin, junior forward Erin Landy, senior midfielder Dani Ackerman, and sophomore midfielder Hayley Kim have point totals of 14, 13, 12 and 10, respectively… McKeveny leads the team and is fourth in the conference with 12 goals… Kim is tops with eight assists, which is tied for second in the conference… Caruana is second in goals (9) and assists (7)… Landy and McLaughlin have six goals each… Ackerman and sophomore forward Sam Eberle have four goals each… Ackerman leads the team with 86 shots… Ackerman is tied for second in the conference in shots (86) and ranks fourth in shots per game (4.53)… Wageman is 12-5 with a goals-against average (GAA) of 1.16, a .846 save percentage, 104 saves and four shutouts… Wageman is second in the conference in GAA (1.16) and save percentage (.846).

TEAM STATISTICS: The Hawks are 4-4 on the road this season… New Paltz leads the conference with 418 shots and 205 penalty corners… New Paltz is third in the conference in goals (50), second in assists (27) and second in GAA (1.11)… The Hawks have outshot opponents 418-210 and have outscored them 50-21… New Paltz holds a 289-146 shots-on-goal advantage… New Paltz attempted 256 penalty corners and allowed just 117… The Hawks have outscored their opponent 24-11 in the first half and 26-10 in the second half.

TITLE GAME SUCCESS: The Hawks have won the past three SUNYAC title games, defeating Cortland in 2012 and 2013 in double-overtime shootout victories… In 2014 (W, 4-0), Caruana, then-senior midfielder Deirdre O'Neill, Ackerman and McKeveny all scored goals, with Wageman making 10 saves for the shutout…  In 2013 (W, 5-4), Ackerman, Caruana and McKeveny all tallied scores… In 2012 (W, 2-1), O'Neill notched the regulation New Paltz goal in the team's debut in the championship match.

HOW THE RED DRAGONS ADVANCED: The Red Dragons advanced to their first SUNYAC title game in two years when they defeated SUNY Oneonta 2-0 on Wednesday, Nov. 4… Cortland eliminated Oneonta from the SUNYAC Tournament for the second time in three years… Junior forward Gabby Stein scored the first goal of the game at the 36:57 mark, her 15th of the season… Three minutes later, senior forward Brittany Murphy found the back of the cage to make it a 2-0 game, Murphy's fifth of the season… Cortland outshot Oneonta 16-8 and held an 11-5 advantage in the shots-on-goal category… Cortland also held an 11-9 cushion in penalty corners… Freshman goalkeeper Kailynne Reinoehl made five stops in the victory.

STATISTICAL LEADERS: Four Red Dragons have double-digit point totals this season… Stein is first in the conference with 35 points… Freshman forward Jessica Welsh is fourth in the conference with 26 points… Murphy and sophomore midfielder/back Megan O'Brien have 11 points each… Stein is first in the conference with 15 goals… Welsh is tied for second in the conference with 13 goals… Murphy and O'Brien have five goals apiece… Stein and senior midfielder Jillian Vogl are tied for the team lead with five assists each… Stein is tied with Ackerman for second in the conference in shots (86), and is second in the conference in shots per game (4.78)…  Reinoehl is 14-4 with a .755 GAA, a .867 save percentage, 85 saves and seven shutouts… Reinoehl ranks first in the conference in GAA (.755), save percentage (.867) and shutouts (7).

TEAM STATISTICS: The Red Dragons are 8-1 at home this season… Their only loss at home came against Skidmore College on Sept. 9 by a score of 2-0… Cortland ranks first in the conference in GAA (.827), second in goals (51) and third in shots (332), points (123) and assists (21)… The Red Dragons have outshot opponents 332-176 and have outscored them 51-15… Cortland has attempted 177 penalty corners and has allowed 125… The Red Dragons have outscored their opponents 26-7 in the first half and 24-8 in the second half.

TITLE GAME SUCCESS: Cortland has gone 14-3 all-time in SUNYAC title games, with two of those three losses coming against New Paltz… Last season was the first time since conference play had been established that Cortland did not advance to the SUNYAC title game… Cortland last won the SUNYAC championship in 2011 by a score of 2-1 in overtime against Oneonta.
 

LAST MEETING: Cortland defeated New Paltz by a score of 1-0 back on Sept. 26… O'Brien scored the lone goal in the game at the 22:01 mark… Reinoehl made nine stops for the shutout while Wageman notched three saves for the Hawks… Ackerman, Caruana and McKeveny tallied shot totals of five, four and three for New Paltz, respectively… Murphy led Cortland with three shots… Despite the loss, New Paltz held a 15-5 advantage in shots and 13-4 edge in the shots-on-goal category… New Paltz also held a 12-5 cushion in penalty corners.
 

WHAT'S NEXT: The winner of the game will earn the SUNYAC's automatic bid into the 2015 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Tournament, with the first round games being held on Wednesday, Nov. 11. The national semifinal and final rounds will take place on Nov. 21-22 at Lexington, Va., hosted by Washington & Lee University.
