NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team emerged victorious in its final dual match of the 2014-15 campaign, downing non-conference Union (N.Y.) College, 7-2, on Thursday afternoon at the North Tennis Courts.
New Paltz rises to 12-7 overall with the win and closes out its season on Saturday, April 25, when it hosts its annual New Paltz Tournament at 8:30 a.m. Union drops to 3-11 with the loss and hosts William Smith College in its Liberty League finale on Sunday, April 26, at 11 a.m.
On a day that marked the final dual match for seniors
Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) and
Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack), the duo posted an 8-2 win at flight one of doubles, marking the most lopsided score in doubles action on the afternoon. Freshmen
Brittany Grandville (Tappan Zee, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and
Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) teamed up to win, 8-4, at flight two, while sophomore
Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and junior
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) prevailed, 8-4, at flight three.
The Dutchwomen countered by winning at two flights in singles play, but the Hawks were able to secure the match win with four singles victories. Tierney provided the largest margin of victory for New Paltz in singles action, defeating her counterpart, 6-2, 6-2, at flight five.
