ITHACA, N.Y. – Playing in its first match up north this spring, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team defeated host Ithaca College 7-2 on Friday afternoon at Wheeler Tennis Courts.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 11-6 overall and will prepare to host Stevens on Wednesday, April 8 at 3:30 p.m. The Bombers, meanwhile, move to 12-5 overall and travel to The College of New Jersey on Sunday, April 12 at 10 a.m.
New Paltz went 4-2 in singles action and won every doubles contest on Friday. In doubles, the senior captain combination of
Devin Tracy (Great River, N.Y./East Islip) and
Jessica Schmidt (Commack, N.Y./Commack) defeated sophomore Haley Kusak and senior Carly Siegel, 9-8 (7-5) at flight one. The freshmen duo of
Brittany Grandville (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and
Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) defeated seniors Kelly Fishback and Allison Vizgaitis 8-5 at flight two.
Sophomore
Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and junior
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) combined to beat sophomore Jodi Grosberg and senior Alyssa Steinweis, 8-5, at flight three.
At flight two singles, Grandville earned a tough-fought victory 2-6, 6-1, 10-6 over Siegel. Tyson picked up the flight three win, 6-4, 6-2, over Vizgaitis. Tierney earned a 6-4, 6-1 win against Fishback at flight five and Tracy enjoyed a 6-0, 6-4 flight six victory over Grosberg in her first singles action of the year.
