SPENCERPORT, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team cruised to an 8-1 non-conference win over The College at Brockport on Saturday afternoon at the Salmon Creek Tennis Club, sweeping all three doubles flights before dropping just one match in singles play.
New Paltz rises to 4-0 overall with the win and next hosts the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. Brockport dropped to 4-1 with the loss and next entertains SUNY Geneseo on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 4 p.m.
While the Hawks made it through doubles play with wins at all three flights, the Golden Eagles showed resolve in flights one and three. Junior
Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) and senior
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) provided the lone lopsided score in the doubles portion of the match, besting their counterparts by an 8-1 score.
In singles action, Ammirati provided the highlight among several positive results for the Hawks, downing Brockport's top singles player, 6-0, 6-1, at flight one. Brockport recorded a win at flight five, and with the match result already decided, the two teams played pro sets at flights three and six. Sophomore
Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) won, 8-0, at flight three, while junior
Liz Palmer (Woodstock, N.Y./Cazenovia) prevailed, 8-3, at flight six.
