NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team opened their 2015-16 campaign with a 8-1 win over SUNY Cortland in the first day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play at the New Paltz North Tennis Courts.
New Paltz rises to 1-0 and takes on Catskill Cup rival SUNY Oneonta tomorrow at 1 p.m. Cortland drops to 0-1 and will face SUNY Plattsburgh at 10:30 a.m.
The Hawks won two out of three doubles matches against the Red Dragons. Sophomores
Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) and
Brittany Grandville (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) won 8-4 in flight one. Senior co-captain
Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) and junior
Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) defeated their opponent 8-0 in flight two.
In singles action, New Paltz swept the field. Ammirati was victorious in flight one, defeating her opponent 6-4, 6-0. Grandville was victorious in flight two, winning 6-2, 6-2 while Tyson went 6-2, 6-1 in flight three. In the fourth flight, Tierney won 6-4, 6-0 with senior co-captain
Allie Starke (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) winning flight five 6-1, 6-1. Freshman
Lindsay Haley (Hicksville, N.Y./St. Anthony's) rounded out the Hawks line up in flight six and won 6-2, 6-1.
