NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's tennis team defeated SUNY Plattsburgh in the final day of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Pool Play at the North Tennis Courts.
 
The Hawks' triple victory this weekend puts them in the top seed in the Eastern division of the SUNYAC Tournament, which will be held Friday-Sunday, Oct. 9-11 in Binghamton, N.Y. New Paltz will play the No. 4 seed from the SUNYAC West division in the SUNYAC Quarterfinals.
 
New Paltz swept the Cardinals in doubles action with sophomores Brittany Grandville (Tappan, N.Y./Tappan Zee) and Carol Tyson (Clinton Corners, N.Y./Rhinebeck) winning flight one in 8-5 while senior co-captain Laura Tierney (Berkeley Heights, N.J./Governor Livingston) and junior Olivia Ammirati (Huntington, N.Y./Huntington) won 8-1 in flight two. Juniors Liz Palmer (Woodstock, N.Y./Cazenovia) and Maryann Badura (Harriman, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) defeated their opponent 8-3 in flight three.
 
The Hawks won five out of six flights in singles. Ammirati took victory in flight one, winning 6-2, 6-1. Grandville and Tyson won flights two and three, respectively with 6-0, 6-1. Tierney won flight four in 6-1, 6-1.
 
Senior co-captain Allie Starke (Binghamton, N.Y./Susquehanna Valley) fell in flight five with her opponent winning 6-3, 6-4. Sophomore Emi Lewis (New York City, N.Y./NYC Lab School) rounded out the line up in flight six, winning 6-0, 6-3.
 
The Hawks (3-0) compete in their first away match against the Rochester Institute of Technology Friday, Sept. 11 at 3:30 p.m. while Plattsburgh (1-3) competes against Castleton University Wednesday, Sept. 9 at 4 p.m.
