NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Junior forward
Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, NY/Sayville) scored twice in the first six minutes of action on Wednesday afternoon as the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team defeated non-conference opponent Stevens 5-3 at North Turf Field.
O'Reilly scored in the third and the sixth minute for her sixth and seventh goals of the season, respectively. The junior later assisted on a goal to give her a five-point outing as New Paltz now has a four-match winning streak against the Ducks.
Despite the two-goal victory, the Hawks (8-3) held a slim 16-15 shot advantage and led the Ducks (7-4) in penalty corners, 15-8.
After O'Reilly gave the Hawks the early 2-0 lead, the Ducks notched a goal in the 19
th minute to cut the advantage in half, which was the score at intermission.
Junior midfielder
Hayley Kim (West Hurley, NY/Onteora) began the second half with a goal in the 40
th minute, thanks to assists from senior back
Colleen Roemer (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane) and freshman forward
Sophia Urrutia (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) directly off a penalty corner to give the Hawks a 3-1 cushion.
Senior forward
Erin Landy (Glemont, NY/Bethlehem Central) followed that with a goal from O'Reilly in the 53
rd minute to increase the lead to 4-1.
Erin Landy notched two goals on Wednesday, including a score in the 70th minute.
The Ducks would not go away, however, and tacked on two goals in the 53
rd and 62
nd minutes to climb to within one, 4-3. The Hawks put the finishing touches on the home victory when Landy enjoyed her second score of the game off a Kim assist in the 70
th minute.
Senior forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) led the Hawks' attack with six shots, four being on target. Kim chipped in four shots while O'Reilly and Landy registered three and two shots, apiece.
Junior goalkeeper
Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) finished with seven saves for her eighth win of the season, including a clutch penalty stroke save in the 55
th minute to keep New Paltz ahead by two goals.
New Paltz will travel to No. 3 Middlebury on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 12 p.m.
