MIDDLEBURY, VT – Three different players scored for the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team as the Hawks fell at No. 3 Middlebury College 4-3 in overtime on Sunday afternoon.
After giving up a goal only 45 seconds into the match, New Paltz (8-4 overall) caged the equalizer in the third minute when junior forward
Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, NY/Sayville) scored her eighth goal of the year off an assist from junior midfielder
Hayley Kim (West Hurley, NY/Onteora).
Middlebury (8-2) went ahead 2-1 in the 20
th minute as this was the score heading into intermission.
The game remained 2-1 in favor of the Panthers until the 63
rd minute when freshman forward
Kaitlyn Gunter (Schuylerville, NY/Schuylerville) tipped in a pass from sophomore forward
Serena Capsello (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) to knot the contest at 2-2 with a little under eight minutes to play.
The Panthers went ahead once again, also in the 63
rd minute, to put the Hawks in a 3-2 hole. However, senior forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) enjoyed her eighth goal of the year to tie the contest at 3-3 in the 64
th minute and force the overtime session.
Unfortunately, Middlebury notched the game-winner in the third minute of the extra period to hand New Paltz the tough defeat.
Junior goalkeeper
Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) played great in the cage, making 12 saves against the Panthers. Offensively, the Hawks managed 10 shots as McKeveny fired off four shots (three on goal). O'Reilly recorded two shots while Kim and senior back
Colleen Roemer (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane) tallied one shot apiece.
New Paltz will prepare for its second-straight road game at a nationally-ranked opponent as the Hawks travel to No. 19 Kean on Tuesday, Oct. 11 at 7:30 p.m.
