Thursday ResultsBUFFALO – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team kicked off day one of the swimming portion of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships on Thursday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center, ranking third out of nine teams with 139 points.
SUNY Geneseo leads the team standings with 323 points. SUNY Fredonia holds a slight two-point lead over the Hawks with 141 points, while SUNY Cortland ranks fourth with 135 points. SUNY Oneonta (fifth, 97), Buffalo State (sixth, 87), The College at Brockport (seventh, 72), SUNY Oswego (eighth, 70) and SUNY Potsdam (ninth, 60) round out the remainder of the team standings.
Action continues at the meet tomorrow, with the preliminary heats set for 10 a.m. and finals slated for 6 p.m.
New Paltz began the evening session with a program record in the 200 freestyle relay, as the foursome of junior
Austin Kowalsky (Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham), sophomore
Caleb Treadwell (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) and seniors
Ethan Cooke (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) and
Will Koenig (Highland, N.Y./Redlands East Valley) clocked a second-place 1:23.73 to shatter their former mark of 1:24.46 that they set earlier this season.
In the 500 freestyle, sophomore
Barrett Celecki (Barneveld, N.Y./Holland Patent) and junior
Rob Cahn (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) placed fifth (4:47.20) and sixth (4:49.96), respectively, while sophomore
Matthew Kessler (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall Central) finished 11th overall clocking a 4:51.13 in the consolation final.
Senior
Ryan Lindgren (Hurley, N.Y./Kingston) scored points for the Hawks in the 200 individual medley, as he covered the event in a 13th-place time of 2:00.53.
Koenig edged out the program record in the 50 freestyle to lead the Hawks in the event, as he charted a third-place time of 21.12. Koenig, who earned Second-Team All-SUNYAC honors by virtue of his finish in the event, bettered the former program standard of 21.13 that was set by Dave Gardner back in 2009. Kowalsky also qualified for the championship final and placed fifth, clocking a 21.55. In the consolation final, Treadwell finished 10th (21.57) overall, while Cooke took 16th (22.14).
Finally, in the 400 medley relay, the quartet of Treadwell, Lindgren, Cooke and Koenig narrowly missed the program record in the event, finishing with a fourth-place time of 3:30.70.
