Friday ResultsBUFFALO – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's swimming team continues to fight for second-place positioning in the team standings, as the Hawks finished day two of the swimming portion State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday at Erie Community College's Burt Flickinger Aquatic Center ranked third out of nine teams with 331 points.
SUNY Fredonia sits just 10 points in front of the Hawks in second place with 341 points, and with both diving events out of the way, New Paltz chase the Blue Devils tomorrow. SUNY Geneseo tops the field with 703 points, while SUNY Cortland (fourth, 305), SUNY Oneonta (fifth, 244), SUNY Oswego (sixth, 183), Buffalo State (seventh, 166), SUNY Potsdam (eighth, 146) and The College at Brockport (ninth, 143) round out the remainder of the team standings.
Action concludes at the meet tomorrow, with the preliminary heats set for 10 a.m. and finals slated for 6 p.m. Following the preliminary heats, all but the final heat of the 1,650 freestyle, a timed-final event, will be contested.
New Paltz kicked off Friday's evening session with a program record in the 200 medley relay, as the foursome of sophomore
Caleb Treadwell (Cortland, N.Y./Cortland) and seniors
Ryan Lindgren (Hurley, N.Y./Kingston),
Ethan Cooke (Middletown, Conn./Middletown) and
Will Koenig (Highland, Calif./Redlands East Valley) combined for a third-place time of 1:33.34. That swim eclipsed the former program standard of 1:34.48 set by the same foursome last year.
Sophomore
Matthew Kessler (Highland Mills, N.Y./Cornwall Central) made the championship final of the 400 individual medley and placed seventh with a time of 4:23.64. Freshman
Joe Galante (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) led four Hawks in the consolation final of the event, as he won the heat with a ninth-place time of 4:25.13. Sophomores
Kevin Sales (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East) and
Chad Plante (Naples, N.Y./Naples) and junior
Thomas Whittico (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) placed 10th (4:29.28), 13th (4:32.13) and 14th (4:33.34), respectively.
Treadwell broke the program record in the 100 butterfly twice on Friday, but his evening swim will end up as the one on the books. After swimming a 51.49 in the preliminary heats, he clocked a fourth-place time of 51.11 at night to lower the former standard of 51.62 set by Steve Cozzolongo back in 2010. Tom Anderson (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) and Koenig tied for 13th overall with a time of 53.39, while junior
Austin Kowalsky (Bellmore, N.Y./W.C. Mepham) and sophomore
Colin Duell (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) placed 15th (53.73) and 16th (53.86), respectively.
New Paltz scored both of its entries in the 200 freestyle, as sophomore
Barrett Celecki (Barneveld, N.Y./Holland Patent) charted a sixth-place time of 1:46.27 in the championship final and sophomore
Nick Wills (Stratford, Conn./Stratford) posted a 14th-place time of 1:49.25 coming out of the consolation final.
Lindgren edged the program record in the 100 breaststroke in the preliminary heats, as his time of 57.96 wiped out the former standard of 57.98 set by Jon Amoia back in 2002. During the evening session, Lindgren and Duell finished seventh (59.16) and eighth (59.82), respectively. Juniors
Vitaut Gurskiy (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Lindenhurst) and
Matt Alfultis (Waterford, Conn./Waterford) represented the Hawks in the consolation final, placing 11th (1:00.27) and 13th (1:01.70) overall, respectively.
Sophomore
Marc Piliero (Peekskill, N.Y./Peekskill) was New Paltz's lone entry in the 100 backstroke and ended up placing 10th overall (56.36).
In the evening's final event, New Paltz's 800 freestyle relay team of junior
Rob Cahn (Bellmore, N.Y./John F. Kennedy), Celecki, Kessler and Galante finished fourth with a time of 7:10.89.
