Box Score NEW YORK CITY, N.Y. – The No. 1 ranked State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to 23 as the Hawks defeated host Hunter College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-19, 25-18) on Wednesday evening.
The Hawks improve their record to 24-2 with the win and will return to United Volleyball Conference (UVC) play on Saturday, March 26 for the final weekend cross over. New Paltz will face No. 9 Elmira College at 1:30 p.m. followed by a 4 p.m. contest with host No. 10 Vassar College.
Hunter drops to 19-8 and moves on to play The City College of New York and York (N.Y.) College in a tri-match on Saturday, March 26 at 9 a.m.
New Paltz hit .507 (45-8-73) for the match and held a 5-2 advantage in service aces and a 4-0 edge in blocks while limiting Hunter to a .114 clip (26-18-70).
Junior middle blocker
Steven Woessner (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) hit .714 on five kills, seven attempts and no errors while senior middle blocker
Christopher Husmann (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) floored eight kills on 12 attempts for a .583 clip (8-1-12) and tallied one block solo.
Sophomore outside hitter
Anthony Bonilla (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) also notched eight kills while junior opposite
Joe Norman (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) chipped in seven kills to help the offense. Senior setter
Christian Smith (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) dished out 38 assists and provided seven digs and three aces.
Sophomore opposite Ben Crusinberry led the offense for Hunter with 11 kills while junior middle blocker Steven Torquino added nine kills. Junior setter Nicholas Sanchez doled out 19 assists and defended five digs in Hunter's efforts.
The Hawks hit .545 (12-0-22) to grab a 25-10 opening set win but Hunter kept a closer score in the second frame until the Hawks pushed a 4-2 run to take the lead. Hunter managed to cut the score to 23-19 but a Hunter service error and a Husmann kill closed out the set, giving the Hawks a 2-0 edge heading into the third frame.
Hunter collected three straight points for a 5-4 margin to take its first lead of the match, but Norman floored a kill to tie the score. Both teams traded points to lock the score at 8-all before New Paltz went off on an 8-2 spurt for a 16-10 advantage. The Hawks maintained their lead throughout the rest of the set to coast to a 25-18 win to clinch the match.
