Box Score 2 NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The No. 2-ranked State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to 17 as the Hawks defeated Penn State Behrend 3-0 (25-19, 25-17, 25-19) and No. 13 New York University 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-15, 25-22) in the second United Volleyball Conference (UVC) cross over weekend on Sunday in the Hawk Center.
With the pair of wins, the Hawks improve to a 19-2 overall and 5-0 UVC. New Paltz returns to action on Wednesday, March 9 when it hosts No. 1 Springfield College at 6 p.m. in the Hawk Center. The Lions drop to 4-12, 1-4 UVC and will to D'Youville College on Tuesday, March 15 for a 7 p.m. match-up. The Violets drop to 8-8, 4-2 UVC and return home to host York (N.Y.) College on Wednesday, March 9 at 7:30 p.m.
No. 2 New Paltz 3, Penn-St. Behrend 0 Junior middle blocker/opposite
Jake Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) hit .625 on 16 hits, one error, and 24 total attacks to lead the Hawks. Sophomore middle blocker/outside hitter
Ryan Cole (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) defended a career-high 11 digs and tallied a match-high five service aces.
Sophomore setter
Mitchell Kennedy (Penfield, N.Y./Fairport) dished out a career-high 39 assists and collected two blocks (one solo, one assist) in the win.
Freshmen outside hitters Tyler Herrmann and Tyler Fiely led the Lions' attack with five kills apiece while freshman setter Anthony Sprentz doled out 18 assists and defended seven digs.
The Hawks hit .446 (49-12-83) for the match and collected seven aces. The Lions concluded the match with a .200 clip (21-9-60) and notched 12 block assists.
The Lions pulled ahead on two New Paltz attack errors and a kill by Fiely to take a 4-1 lead in the opening set. The Hawks quickly caught up as a kill by freshman outside hitter
Eric Tuttle (Rochester, N.Y./West Irondequoit) and a Cole kill and service ace tied the score. Both teams traded points until Tuttle notched a pair of kills and a service ace to pull the Hawks ahead, 12-8.
After a brief time out by the Lions, the Hawks held on to their lead, extending it to 23-19 on a kill by Roessler before sealing the win on back-to-back aces from Cole.
An 8-6 spurt in the start second set placed the Hawks ahead on the scoreboard but the Lions rallied to level the score to 12-all. New Paltz rushed ahead on a 6-1 burst for an 18-13 edge, forcing the Lions to take a timeout. Coming out of the break the Hawks never let up the pressure as they coasted to the 25-17 set victory on another pair of aces by Cole.
In the third frame, New Paltz grabbed an 11-7 advantagecould not be caught as the Hawks charged ahead on to a 19-13 lead an 8-4 burst, capped off on a Lions attack error. The Lions were able to slice the deficit to 23-19 but the Hawks would take the match win as Roessler floored the final kill.
No. 2 New Paltz 3, No. 13 NYU 1 Despite dropping the second set to the Violets, the Hawks rallied in the third and fourth sets to take home their second win of the day.
The Hawks hit .435 and .393 in the third and fourth frames, respectively, for an overall .304 clip (48-17-102) and collected 11 aces. The Violets to hit .206 (44-23-102) and finished with seven total blocks.

Andy Fishman (Cornwallville, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) and junior opposite
Joe Norman (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) led the New Paltz attack with 12 kills each while senior middle blocker
Christopher Husmann (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) chipped in nine kills for a .571 clip (9-1-14).

Kevin Nardone (Port Washington, N.Y./Paul D. Schreiber) defended 10 digs for the match while senior setter
Christian Smith (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) dished out 43 assists.
Senior Phil Bueno hit .548 (21-4-31) and tallied 21 kills for the Violets while junior setter Derrick Chiu doled out 33 assists and defended 10 digs in the loss.
The Violets grabbed six of the eight points in the first set to storm ahead with a 6-2 lead before pushing a 6-4 run for a 12-6 edge, forcing the Hawks to take a timeout. Although NYU managed to push its lead to 16-8, New Paltz cut the score to 117-16 on an 8-1 spurt before a pair of kills by Husmann and two attack errors by NYU gave the Hawks the lead. The Hawks continued to lead throughout the rest of set, sealing the 25-20 set win.
The second frame started out in New Paltz's favor but NYU remained close behind before tying the score to 16-all. The Violets then rushed ahead on a 6-3 run to grab a 22-19 edge. Tuttle and Woessner each floored a kill to bring the Hawks within three but New Paltz would ultimately surrender the set to NYU.

Steven Woessner (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), to lead 14-8. The Hawks limited the Violets to a .000 clip to take the win for a 2-1 lead heading into the final set.
Both teams fought hard to grab the advantage in the fourth frame but it would fall in favor of the Hawks as New Paltz earned five-straight points off Smith's serves for a 13-7 cushion. The Violets continued to trail the Hawks throughout the set, holding New Paltz at 24-22 before Husmann floored the kill to close the match.
