ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Senior middle blocker
Christopher Husmann (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) landed his 1000th career-kill to help the top-ranked, top-seeded State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team extend its winning streak to 30 as the Hawks defeated the No. 15 Wentworth Institute of Technology, 3-1 (19-25, 25-20-, 25-15, 25-17), in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Friday afternoon at Nazareth College's Kidera Gymnasium.
Husmann, a two-time First-Team All-American and an All-United Volleyball Conference (UVC) First Team honoree, became the sixth New Paltz student-athlete to reach the milestone, posting five kills and contributing five blocks (two solo, three assists) in the victory.
With the win, the Hawks improve to 31-2 overall and will play the No. 4 Stevens Institute of Technology in the semifinal match tomorrow at 4 p.m. in a rematch of the UVC title match just two weeks ago. The Leopards conclude their season, 23-9.
New Paltz held a slight edge in services aces (9-8), blocks (8-7), and hit .363 (54-17-102) for the match while limiting Wentworth to a .247 (37-16-85) clip.

Joe Norman (Bay Shore, N.Y./Bay Shore) paced the New Paltz offense with 14 kills and recorded three service aces. Sophomore outside hitter

Andy Fishman (Cornwallville, N.Y./Cairo-Durham) chipped in nine kills and three service aces.

For Wentworth, junior outside hitter Jake Reed paced the Leopards with 15 kills and four service aces while sophomore opposite Jon Roat recorded 10 kills and provided five digs. Sophomore setter/libero Kevin Mcpeek dished out 33 assists in the loss for the Leopards.
Wentworth took the first two points to open the first set but the Hawks would quickly catch up on a Norman kill and a Wentworth error, tying up the score. The teams traded points until back-to-back service aces by Sean Mullen handed Wentworth a 7-4 cushion. The Leopards remained ahead by three before New Paltz added two points to cut the score to 9-8, but Wentworth pushed a 5-1 run for a 14-9 margin.

Steven Woessner (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) added a kill each to slice the deficit to 15-14. The Hawks continued to trail and would once again bring the score within one but Wentworth could not be caught as an 8-3 burst gave the Leopards the set victory.
New Paltz hit . 591 (16-3-22) to take the second frame win win and even the match to 1-all. The teams started off trading points before Wentworth would pull ahead, 13-11. New Paltz then rattled off a 4-0 spurt, capped off by a Fishman kill, to give the Hawks their biggest lead, 15-13, of the match so far. The Leopards would trail the Hawks for the rest of the frame, bringing the score within two (22-20), before New Paltz scored the final three points, capped off by a Bonilla kill, to close the set.
The Hawks came out swinging in the third set, pushing an 8-3 lead on a 4-0 spurt to force Wentworth into a timeout. The Leopards capitalized on a pair of New Paltz errors to trim the deficit but would fall further behind as the Hawks scored six unanswered points to increase their lead to 19-10. The Leopards would be able to grab five more points for a 24-15 tally but would give up the set on a service error.
The fourth frame saw the Hawks storm ahead to a 15-9 lead prior to the media timeout. Coming out of the break, a Roat kill and Wentworth service ace closed the score to 15-11, but the Hawks extended their lead on a 4-2 run. A pair of kills by Bonilla and Fishman pushed New Paltz to a 23-16 margin before Husmann and Woessner floored the final two kills to clinch the match.
