SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Senior forward
Erin Landy (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central) notched a first half goal and assist for the State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team as the Hawks defeated host Union 5-3 on Tuesday evening, the first of three contests for New Paltz this week.
The Hawks improve to 3-1 and will prepare for their home opener on Friday, Sept. 16 against State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) foe Morrisville State at 4 p.m.
The New Paltz attack doubled the Dutchwomen (2-2) in shots, 20-10, as junior forward
Justine O'Reilly (West Sayville, NY/Sayville) and junior midfielder
Hayley Kim (West Hurley, NY/Onteora) combined for 11 total shots. Landy scored both of her goals on just two attempts.
Sophomore forward
Serena Capsello (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) started the scoring for the Hawks in just the fourth minute of action, scoring her second goal of the year off an assist from senior forward
Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East).
After Union notched the equalizer in the 10
th minute, O'Reilly enjoyed her fourth score of the campaign, tallying a goal from four yards out off an assist from freshman forward
Sophia Urrutia (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) as the Hawks regained the lead, 2-1.
Just five minutes before halftime, both teams accounted for three scores as Landy knocked home a pass from McKeveny in the 31
st minute and New Paltz followed that with a goal from freshman forward
Kaitlyn Gunter (Schuylerville, NY/ Schuylerville) off an assist from Landy in the 33
rd minute to hand New Paltz a 4-1 cushion. Union cut that lead in half with a goal in the 35
th minute, just 15 seconds before halftime.
McKeveny tacked on a score from 10 yards out in the 64
th minute for her third goal of the year to complete the offense for the Hawks. McKeveny finished with four points on the evening and is now in second place all-time with 33 career goals and is tied for third all-time with 20 career assists. Her 86 career points now rank fourth-best in program history.
Junior goalkeeper
Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area), who was just named the SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second-straight period, made four saves.
