Field Hockey Earns 5-1 Win at Geneseo

Box Score

GENESEO, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team dominated offensively as the Hawks enjoyed a 5-1 road victory at SUNY Geneseo on Saturday afternoon.

This was a rematch of last season's semifinal round of the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament, which New Paltz won by a score of 2-1. The win pushed the Hawks' SUNYAC record to an undefeated 3-0.

New Paltz (6-2, 3-0 SUNYAC) outshot the Knights (1-7, 1-2 SUNYAC) 16-12, with 12 of the Hawks' shots getting on the cage. New Paltz also held a slim lead in corners at 8-7.

Senior forward Kayla McKeveny (Holbrook, NY/Sachem East) led the way with a pair of goals. During the match, she passed Danielle Conklin '14 for second on the program's all-time goal scoring list.

With her 36 career goals, McKeveny now only trails Dani Ackerman '16, a current assistant coach on the team, who accumulated 39 goals during her career.

Freshman forward Sophia Urrutia  (Westbury, NY/Carle Place) also had a strong performance with a goal and a pair of assists. Senior forward Erin Landy (Glenmont, NY/Bethlehem Central) and sophomore forward Serena Capsello (Baldwinsville, NY/C.W. Baker) both tallied one goal apiece, while senior back Colleen Roemer (Pound Ridge, NY/Fox Lane) chipped in with one assist.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Gangewere (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth Area) made seven stops in the cage and did not allow a goal until the final minute of the contest.

Landy started the scoring with a goal at the 17th minute and McKeveny later followed with a goal off a feed from Urrutia at the 31st minute to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead at the half.

McKeveny scored her second goal shortly into the second half at the 39th minute off a corner by Roemer. Capsello scored her goal at the 50-minute mark off an assist by Urrutia, who would then score a goal of her own less than a minute later.

Knights' sophomore forward Gabriella Clare broke up the shutout with a goal during the last minute off a helper from junior midfielder Cara Stafford.

The Hawks will continue SUNYAC play as they travel to Oneonta (2-6, 1-1 SUNYAC) to face the Red Dragons on Wednesday, Sept. 28 at 4 p.m.
