After a long road stand, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team is headed back home Saturday to take on rival SUNY Oneonta.
The Red Dragons have won 14 of 15 match ups, including a 1-0 win last season.
The Hawks (4-10-1 overall, 0-5-1 SUNYAC) are hoping to avenge that loss this time around on their home turf where they are 3-2 this season.
"Saturday definitely means a lot. Not just for the seniors, but for the whole team too," said SUNY New Paltz senior
Monica Rouse. "We need this win to keep us in SUNYACs and go to [playoffs] and it will not only help us in this game, but the next two games. We need these three points no matter what. We can't waste the time. We need three points."
The Hawks are suffering through a four-game losing skid, including a 4-0 loss against No. 25 Western Connecticut State University on Wednesday.
The past two days of practice have focused on defending the Red Dragons' services in the box, as well as moving forward as a team to get more numbers in the final third.
"This week we've been working a lot on transitioning from defense to offense. So, when we win the ball how quickly can we transition from offense and trying to get it up the field," said SUNY New Paltz senior
Alicia Fanni. "We've been working on finishing in the box, sending it from the corners and just doing whatever we can to get a goal and start getting forward for it."
Oneonta sits at 2-9-1 overall and 2-4 in SUNYAC play.
Julie Steinhauer leads the Red Dragons offensively with a team-high four goals and an assist.
So far this season, Oneonta and SUNY New Paltz each have a win against one another in the annual bragging rights tournament, The Catskill Cup. The Hawks hope to earn another victory over the Red Dragons Saturday, as they are scheduled for a 1 p.m. match up.
