New Paltz, NY – The State University of New York at New at New Paltz women's tennis team ended the unbeaten season for the Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta with a 6-3 victory. The Red Dragons were 9-0 coming into the match and both teams were tied at the top of the East Division of the SUNYAC at 2-0. The win clinched the number one seed in the East for the Hawks as the SUNYAC Championships begin next weekend.
The Catskill Cup matchup between the Hawks and Red Dragons started out as a battle in doubles play with many long rallies at all three doubles positions. SUNY Oneonta was able to pull out two points from doubles play winning at first and second doubles, but the duo of
Jenna Grandville and
Lindsay Haley got SUNY New Paltz on the board with an 8-3 victory at third doubles.
Singles play started off hot for the Hawks as
Carol Tyson and Haley won the first sets 6-0 at second and sixth singles, respectively.
Courtney Koran and Grandville followed suit as they took the first sets 6-1 at fifth and third singles, respectively.
Emi Lewis continued the high level tennis and won the first set at fourth singles 6-2. Lastly,
Brittany Grandville secured the sweep of all the first sets as she took the set 6-4 at first singles behind some powerful serving and great defense.
Tyson wrapped up her match at second singles with ease taking the second set 6-0. However, the Red Dragons started to show why they were undefeated as they started to fight back. Lewis dropped her second set at fourth singles 6-2 while Haley and Koran found themselves in close second sets. Up 4-3 Koran was able to hold her serve and break her opponents to give the Hawks a 3-2 match lead.

Haley entered a second set tiebreaker while
Jenna Grandville was in a long deuce game at 5-3. Minutes after Haley pulled out a 7-5 tiebreak win to clinch her match and give SUNY New Paltz a 4-2 lead,
Jenna Grandville had match point. A tough serve from the Red Dragons led to a backhand in the net for Grandville. However, she kept it together and was able to get another match point. This time she capitalized and played a great point leading to the Hawks clinching the match and ending the Red Dragons unbeaten season.
Lewis fell in her third set 6-1, but
Brittany Grandville topped off the night for SUNY New Paltz with a 6-2 win in the second set to make it a 6-3 win for the Hawks.
"I am really proud of the team after going 2-1 down in the doubles and turning the match around," said head coach
Rob Bruley. "The team showed a lot of character winning the match 6-3 in a pressure cooker environment."
The Hawks head to SUNYAC Championships in Binghamton next weekend as they hope to reach their 15
th consecutive finals.
