No. 2 Men’s Volleyball Goes 1-1; 41-Match Winning Streak Snapped

ERIE, Pa. – Saturday's loss to No. 9 NYU broke a 41-match winning streak against Division III opponents for the No. 2 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team, a stretch that started back in April 2015.

The Hawks (13-3, 1-1 UVC) opened up the day with a 3-0 (19-25, 17-25, 28-30) defeat at the hands of the No. 9 Violets, marking the first regular season loss for New Paltz  since April 4, 2015 at Springfield (L, 3-2) and the first loss overall (regular & postseason) since April 25, 2015 at Stevens in the 2015 NCAA Division III Semifinals (L, 3-2).

New Paltz rattled off 30-consecutive wins against Division III foes in 2016 en route to the program's first-ever National Championship. The Hawks began 2017 with an 11-match winning streak against D-III opponents.

The Hawks responded nicely with a 3-1 victory (25-23, 25-20, 21-25, 25-18) over host PSU Behrend to close out the weekend. New Paltz will now prepare to host Baruch on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. before traveling to SUNY Polytechnic on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.

Against the No. 9 Violets, junior outside hitter Anthony Bonilla (New Paltz, N.Y./New Paltz) led the attack with 11 kills while freshman outside hitter Aaron Carrk (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) provided seven, hitting .357.

Freshman setter Matthew Grace (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) provided 29 assists and six digs while senior middle blocker Steven Woessner (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) enjoyed three block assists.

New Paltz 3, PSU Behrend 1

Versus the host Lions, Carrk led the offense with 14 kills and tallied 11 digs, for the double double. Sophomore opposite Nick Smith (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) followed with 10 kills, four digs and three aces.

Grace distributed 45 assists and two block assists to close out the first UVC weekend of the year.

The next UVC crossover weekend is at home on Saturday, March 11 as the Hawks host Elmira and Bard.
