NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Eight student-athletes enjoyed five or more kills for the No. 4 State University of New York at New Paltz men's volleyball team as the Hawks took down visiting Baruch 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 25-20) in non-conference action on Wednesday night in the Hawk Center.
Senior middle blocker
Jake Roessler (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) led the attack with 13 kills, hitting .346. Junior outside hitter
Ben Cohen (Wellesley, Mass./Wellesley) enjoyed six kills and eight digs while senior middle blocker
C.J. Borfitz (Inwood, N.Y./Lawrence) tallied six kills, hitting .500.
Freshman outside hitter
Aaron Carrk (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem) notched six kills and senior middle blocker
Steven Woessner (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) recorded six kills on seven swings (.714).
Sophomores
Bradley Schneider (Lockport, N.Y./Lockport) and
Nick Smith (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and junior
Ryan Cole (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem East) all floored five kills apiece for the Hawks, as New Palt hit .333 for the night.
Freshman setter
Matthew Grace (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem North) tied a career-high with 52 assists against the Bearcats.
In the first set, the Hawks jumped out to a 10-4 lead en route to a 25-18 victory. Set two saw New Paltz claim a commanding 20-8 advantage, as the Hawks cruised to a 25-14 win, going up 2-0.
However, the Bearcats (1-8) managed to squeak out a 25-23 win in set number three to force a fourth set. In the last set, the Hawks led 14-8 before Baruch battled back to get to within three, 18-15. New Paltz remained poised down the stretch as Roessler enjoyed two of the last three kills to hand the Hawks the match.
New Paltz (14-3) will prepare to travel to SUNY Polytechnic on Saturday, Feb. 18 at 1 p.m.
