Box Score Utica, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz men's soccer team walked away as the Utica Tournament champions after knocking off the hosting Pioneers 4-0 in a dominating performance Sunday.
"This was our most complete game of the season," said Hawks coach
Kyle Clancy. "Great defensive execution led us being on the ball a lot and helped us create a lot of good chances in both halves."
Luke Dole got the offense started in the 33
rd minute after finishing a pass from
James Hennessy.
Kevin Doorley added on two minutes later, after finding a ball played through by
Ryan Martinez to push the lead to two.
Dole put away his second goal of the day, heading down a cross from Martinez in the 57
th minute.
Luis Tinoco then capped off the scoring onslaught in the 71
st minute, tallying his second goal of the season.
SUNY New Paltz's defense had a stout performance, allowing just three shots against and was a big part of its team's ability to dominate possession in the game and ultimately out-shoot Utica, 30-3.
"We could have done a little better finishing our chances, but I was impressed to see the things we worked on in practice carry in to the game," Clancy said. "After I told them how proud I was of their effort and how well they defended as a team."
With the large lead the Hawks let up a bit in the last few minutes. They kept the clean sheet, but Clancy stressed to his team the importance of playing through a full 90 minutes.
"I reminded them how important it will be to remain focused and switched on at all times," he said. "And to make sure we finish the game off with the same intensity we started with."
SUNY New Paltz (3-2) is looking to build off its solid performance and try notching its third-straight win in its season-opener against Vassar College on Wednesday, which is slated for 4 p.m. start on the South Turf Field.
