SUNY New Paltz Field Hockey Game Preview: SUNY Geneseo and SUNY Brockport

The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey team will host a pair of conference foes this weekend. The Hawks will face The College at Brockport on Friday, Sept. 22 at 4:00 p.m. and reigning SUNYAC Champion SUNY Geneseo the following day at 1:00 p.m.

Last season, SUNY New Paltz beat Brockport by a score of 6-1. The Hawks have not lost to the Golden Eagles since 2008.

Saturday will feature a rematch of last year's SUNYAC semifinal round, which Geneseo won by a score of 1-0 in New Paltz. The Hawks did win their regular season matchup against the Knights in 2016 by a score of 5-1.

Both New Paltz and Geneseo have conference records of 1-0 this season, while Brockport has yet to play a SUNYAC match.
 
New Paltz (2-4, 1-0 SUNYAC):
The Hawks are ranked third in the conference in goals scored (15) and have allowed the fifth-fewest goals (15).

Junior Serena Capsello leads the team and is tied for first in the SUNYAC with four goals. Senior Justine O'Reilly and junior Samantha Ackerman currently have three goals each, and O'Reilly is tied for first in the conference in assists with five and points with 11. Sophomore Kaitlyn Gunter and freshman Carly Croteau have two goals each, and senior Hayley Kim has one goal and two assists. Senior Megan Gangewere leads the SUNYAC with a .830 save percentage and is ranked second with 73 saves.

The Hawks lost their last game on Saturday, Sept. 16 by a score of 3-2 in overtime on the road against No. 16 University of Rochester. Gangewere set a new career high with 26 saves, while Gunter and Ackerman each scored one goal. This past week, Gangewere earned SUNYAC Defensive Player of the Week and National Field Hockey Coaches Association Defensive Player of the Week honorable mention for her performance.
 
Brockport (1-6, 0-0 SUNYAC):
The Golden Eagles are last in the conference in goals scored (2) and have allowed the most goals (28).

Sophomore Abby Meagher and freshman Katie Ziemba each have one goal, while seniors Kaitlin Croghan and Margo Tremaine have tallied one assist each. Junior Sarah Beam leads the SUNYAC with 87 saves.

Brockport lost their last game on Tuesday, Sept. 19 at home against Elmira College by a score of 2-1.
 
Geneseo (3-3, 1-0 SUNYAC):
The Knights are second in the conference in goals scored (18) and have allowed the third-fewest goals (13).

Senior Giovanna Fasanello is tied with O'Reilly for first in the SUNYAC with 11 points and is also tied for the lead in goals with four, while senior Cara Stafford has three goals. Fasanello and Stafford are tied for the team lead with three assists each. Senior Morgan Maley, junior Gabriella Clare and freshman Haley Clark each have two goals. Senior Nicole Gregg leads the Knights with 22 saves, while freshman Mia Ludwig hold a .789 save percentage and a 1.21 goals against average.

Geneseo beat SUNY Cortland 5-0 at home in their last game on Friday, Sept. 15. It was the Knights' first win over the Red Dragons since the semifinal round of the 2014 SUNYAC Tournament. Geneseo will face SUNY Oneonta on Friday, Sept. 22 prior to their match against New Paltz. This will be a rematch of last season's SUNYAC Championship game, which the Knights won 3-2 in overtime.
