Box Score Brockport, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz field hockey came away with a narrow, 4-3 win over hosting The College at Brockport Friday.
The Hawks (8-4 overall, 4-0 SUNYAC) remained undefeated in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) with the victory, despite not playing their best game against the Golden Eagles (4-9, 1-3).
SUNY New Paltz out-shot Brockport, 27-10, with a 28-7 advantage in shots on target. However, its defense had a lackluster performance despite coming off a tremendous effort in a 2-1 victory over SUNY Cortland Oct. 6.
Serena Capsello opened up the game for the Hawks with a goal in the fourth minute, putting away her shot in front of the cage with
Kaitlyn Gunter picking up the assist on the play. The Golden Eagles responded with a goal about 10 minutes later to tie the score at one.
Jessica Ascencao then placed SUNY New Paltz back on top, striking her shot from the top of the circle into the back of the cage for her team-leading 10
th goal of the season.
Gunter added on early in the second half with an unassisted goal, but Brockport quickly responded five minutes later to narrow the score, 3-2.
With five minutes remaining, Gunter gave the Hawks some breathing room after putting in a rebound in front of goal to boost the score, 4-2. The Golden Eagles trimmed the lead to one in the 69
th minute, but SUNY New Paltz held on from there to escape with the, 4-3 victory.
Ryan Dowling earned the start for SUNY New Paltz and made four saves.
Hawks coach
Shanna Szablinski was disappointed with the way her defense came out and knows their performance needs to pick up ten-fold entering a big game against SUNY Geneseo, which undefeated conference record was shattered after Friday's 2-1 loss to SUNY Oneonta, Saturday.
