Box Score Binghamton, NY – The State University of New York at New Paltz tennis team collected its fifth-straight clean sheet Saturday and with the 5-0 victory over Fredonia State, is just one win away of collecting the program's fifth State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) title.
"I was very pleased with the way the team performed," said Hawks coach
Rob Bruley. "We're looking forward to another championship match tomorrow… [We're] going to get some rest tonight and we're looking forward to another competitive SUNYAC tennis championship."
SUNY New Paltz was coming off a perfect weekend where it swept SUNY Geneseo, the Blue Devils and The College at Brockport, respectively, to end the regular season undefeated and claim the top seed in the SUNYAC Tournament for just the first time since 2006.
Despite the lopsided result the first time around, the Hawks knew they couldn't overlook a resilient Blue Devils team.
"At times it can be difficult after beating a team to come back and keep your focus and perform at a high level," Bruley said. "I was very excited that we managed to do that."
Trinity Chow and
Laura Koob kicked off the outing with an 8-1 victory over Anna Chiacchia and Olivia Miller in first doubles. Second singles pair
Victoria Zezula and
Lindsay Haley, and third doubles team,
Courtney Koran and
Emma Messenger each then recorded 8-3 victories to help the Hawks sweep up the doubles matches, only needing two more wins to advance to the championship game.
Koran and Haley officially ended the match, earning 6-0, 6-0 victories over Jane Chiacchia and Taylor Marelli in fifth and sixth singles, respectively, to give the Hawks a 5-0 win.
Before the match ended Chow (6-1, 4-1), Koob (6-0, 1-2), Zezula (5-2) and
Jenna Grandville (6-1, 1-1) were all winning in first, second, third and fourth singles, respectively.
Saturday's victory marked SUNY New Paltz's 17th-straight SUNYAC Championship appearance with its last title win coming in 2010. It will look to end that drought Sunday, as it takes on SUNY Oneonta, which defeated seven-time defending champion SUNY Geneseo in the other semifinal match up.
