SUNY New Paltz Women's Soccer Game Preview: SUNY Oneonta

| By:

The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team is determined to finish its final game of the season by bringing home a win against conference rival SUNY Oneonta Saturday.

"This Saturday we have the chance to prove what kind of team that we really are," said Hawks senior forward Alicia Fanni. "Although we didn't get the results that we wanted, we definitely showed how well we were able to play soccer. There was some really great moments throughout the season that I'm very proud to be a part of."

SUNY New Paltz (2-13-1 overall, 1-6-1 conference) enters the game after suffering a 1-0 lossAlicia Fanni GIF to Ramapo College Wednesday. The game remained in a stalemate throughout the full 90 minutes, sending the game into overtime. The majority of the match was spent on the Hawks' half of the field, but gave SUNY New Paltz the opportunity to display its strong defense. The Hawks stole the ball from their opponent on multiple occasions through effective communication and progressive plays, none of which were wasted; SUNY New Paltz made 10 shots, six of which were on goal.

The Hawks came close to scoring with only 30 seconds left of the second half as senior Raven Blake made a shot on goal off freshman forward Danielle Angyal's corner kick, but was ultimately saved by the Roadrunner's goalkeeper. The game came to an end in the 98th minute as Ramapo College found a rare hole in SUNY New Paltz' defense, which was impenetrable throughout the game.

Despite the loss, the Hawks look forward to winning their final game of the season against State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival, the Red Dragons (7-8, 5-3). SUNY Oneonta is currently seeded seventh of ten teams according to the 2018 SUNYAC women's soccer standings.

"Everyday we show up to a game, we're ready to compete. We get the chance to ruin our rival's day and knock them out of the tournament," said SUNY New Paltz senior forward Rachael Purtell. "I would definitely love to do that to wrap up the season."

Although the Hawks are no longer a contender for the SUNYAC playoffs, they have the opportunity to affect whether or not the Red Dragons advance. If the Hawks reach their goal of ending their last game victorious, SUNY Oneonta will be eliminated from playoff contention as well.

"Our expectations against Oneonta is to really incorporate everything that we've been working on in practice and really show that in the game, work for each other and take some shots on goal," said Blake.

SUNY New Paltz is set to take on the Red Dragons in Oneonta, NY Saturday at 1 p.m.
