Box Score Oneonta, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team battled with hosting SUNY Oneonta through 45 minutes Saturday, determined to ruin the Red Dragons' post-season hopes. But, the Hawks couldn't translate the same result into the second half and ultimately ended with a 5-1 loss in their season finale.
Despite the unimpressive 2-14-1 overall record, SUNY New Paltz made huge strides on the field and in the run of play throughout the year and improved their performance technically and tactically from 2017. For that feat, Hawks coach
Mike Eckberg was proud in his group this season.
"I am very proud of this group," Eckberg said. "Their commitment, attitude and work rate is first class."
After SUNY Oneonta (8-8 overall, 4-5 conference) took the initial lead in the 16th minute, the Hawks responded about 12 minutes later to knot up the score.
SUNY New Paltz center back
Erika McCue registered her first career goal, getting on the end of a pass by
Danielle Angyal to force the game at one heading into halftime.
In the first 45 minutes, SUNY Oneonta held the slight advantage in shots (5-2), while generating five corners to none for the Hawks. But, those numbers ballooned in the second half, as the Red Dragons tallied 11 shots in the final 45 minutes to just one for SUNY New Paltz, while adding three more corners in the game.
It took just 45 seconds into the second half before SUNY Oneonta re-took the lead, with Jessica Downin scoring off a header from Keslie Moinzadeh. The Red Dragons then piled on three more from there to earn the lopsided victory.
Megan Tornatore earned the start in goal for the Hawks and made five saves in net.
Jessica Levinson, McCue and
Kristin Lasker all recorded a shot for the visitors.
SUNY New Paltz ends the season at 2-14-1 overall and 1-7-1 in conference play.
