SUNY New Paltz Tennis Rolls to a 9-0 Sweep over Defending SUNYAC Champion Geneseo

| By:
Box Score Binghamton, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz tennis team was looking forward to Friday's match up since its 2017 season ended last October. The Hawks (5-0 overall, 5-0 conference), were itching for the chance to avenge their loss to SUNY Geneseo, the seven-time State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC) champions.

Not only did they get some pay-back Friday, but did so in dominating fashion. SUNY New Paltz went on to sweep the Knights, 9-0, and handed them their first loss of the season.

"This was an extremely strong performance against a very tough and resilient Geneseo side," said Hawks coach Rob Bruley. "That should go a long way for us to secure the number one seed."

The victory was pivotal in terms of playoff seeding for SUNY New Paltz, as the Knights seemingly were their toughest match up of the weekend. The Hawks have to earn victories over Fredonia State (11-2, 3-2) and The College at Brockport (3-7, 2-6) Saturday and Sunday, respectively, but as it stands, they are primed to claim the top spot in the tournament. Trinity Chow GIF

As for Friday, SUNY New Paltz started the morning with three-straight doubles victories  — a weak point for the team a year ago against SUNY Geneseo. This year it was the Hawks on top, earning a first doubles victory by Trinity Chow and Laura Koob, 8-3, followed by a second doubles win from duo Victoria Zezula and Lindsay Haley (8-4) and third doubles win by pair Courney Koran and Emma Messenger (8-1).

The Hawks then cleaned up at one-through-six singles. Chow defeated Olga Shvetsova, 6-1, 6-0, in first singles. Koob won second singles against Natalia Krol by a score of 6-2, 6-1, while Koran and Haley swept Sam Montague and Grace Klomp, 6-0, 6-0, in fifth and sixth singles, respectively. Zezula and Jenna Grandville each earned three set victories with Zezula defeating Nina Lurie and Grandville beating Julianna Schulz.

"[We're] looking forward to getting back on the court tomorrow," Bruley added. "Everyone from top to bottom played their part and had outstanding matches. One through three doubles, one through six singles had very solid matches."

SUNY New Paltz is back in action Saturday against the Blue Devils starting at 1 p.m. at Binghamton Racquet Club and then will conclude its regular season against the Golden Eagles Sunday at 1 p.m.
