SUNY New Paltz Tennis Weekend Preview: Geneseo, Fredonia and Brockport

| By:
The State University of New York at New Paltz tennis team remains undefeated as it enters its biggest regular season weekend Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Binghamton Racquet Club.

The Hawks (4-0 overall, 4-0 SUNYAC) currently sit atop the State University of New York Conference (SUNYAC) standings alongside the reigning conference champion Knights, who also enter the slate of games at 4-0.

The tennis rivalry between the two programs starts back up Friday at 10 a.m., as the Hawks seek revenge from a SUNY Geneseo team that has knocked them up off in the championship round the last seven years.Lindsay Haley GIF

"Personally, I am super excited to go up against Geneseo this weekend because as long as I've been here and even before, they've definitely been the team to beat and it has always been us two going back and forth, and we've always been second," said SUNY New Paltz senior Lindsay Haley. "So I am super excited, but I also see all the girls just as pumped up as I am and we really are very confident that we can beat them this year."

Along with the Knights, the Hawks also face off against Fredonia State (11-1, 3-1) and The College at Brockport (2-8, 0-4). The Blue Devils are coming off back-to-back SUNYAC wins against Oswego State (8-1) and SUNY Cortland (6-3), with their only conference loss suffered against SUNY Geneseo Sept. 22, 6-3. The Golden Eagles' are still searching for a SUNYAC victory, as their two wins have come in non-conference play against Elmira College (8-1) and Houghton College (5-4).

SUNY New Paltz, meanwhile, had a productive weekend after knocking off Catskill Cup rival and previously undefeated SUNY Oneonta in a tight, 5-4, match, which came down to the final singles matches of the day. After a short-rest, the Hawks managed to sweep visiting Plattsburgh State, 9-0, on Senior Day the following afternoon.

"We're definitely really confident right now," Haley said. "We've had some really big wins last week, especially against Oneonta. So, we're confident that we'll go in with a good seed this weekend."

These last three regular season games for SUNY New Paltz will prove pivotal for SUNYAC seeding. The difference of earning a top seed or a No. 2 seed could mean facing the Cardinals, which the Hawks just handily defeated, or the undefeated Knights.

"It is super important the seeding for the SUNYAC tournament," Haley said. "We typically go in as number two, but this year we have the opportunity to go in as the No. 1 seed and that will make for an easier semifinal for us and possibly an easier final, so it is very important to get these wins this weekend so that we have a better seed for the finals."

SUNY New Paltz is set to take on SUNY Geneseo Friday at 10 a.m., Fredonia State Saturday at 1 p.m. and The College at Brockport Sunday at 1 p.m.
