Box Score New Paltz, NY — The State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team dropped a 2-0 game at home against defending conference champion, SUNY Geneseo Saturday.
The Hawks (2-10-1 overall, 1-4-1 SUNYAC) faired better than last season's outing against the Knights, but still couldn't generate enough chances to knot up what was a 1-0 game for most of the outing.
"I am very proud of how this group continues to compete day in and day out," said SUNY New Paltz coach
Mike Eckberg. "It is certainly a strong weekend for us to take a lot of positives away and build off of this week in training."
The Knights (9-2-1, 6-0) were dynamic in their attack in the run of play and on set pieces. They took just four minutes into the match to put away their first goal, as Miranda Ozimek headed in a cross played front post by Caitie Cunningham.
Although SUNY Geneseo tallied 26 shots to just three for SUNY New Paltz, the Hawks kept firm defensively and it wasn't until a free kick given to the Knights in the 72
nd minute where they found the back of the net to extend their lead. Ashley Byrne stepped up for SUNY Geneseo and netted the team's second goal.
Nicole Sheintul,
Danielle Angyal and
Jessica Levinson each tallied a shot for SUNY New Paltz, while
Megan Tornatore earned the start in goal and recorded 11 saves.
"I thought our pattern play was disrupted and did not allow us to gain a good rhythm and tempo throughout today," Eckberg said. "I thought there was another level in us that we saw in certain sequences."
The Hawks will look to bounce back Friday and Saturday when they're back home to face Plattsburgh State and SUNY Potsdam.
