After upping its win total to six games last season, the State University of New York at New Paltz women's soccer team is primed to make bigger strides in 2018 and push for its first SUNYAC playoff berth since 2012.
"In my four years on the team I would say that yes, this year is the year that I really see the most potential for us to go far," said Hawks senior forward
Rachael Purtell. "So far this preseason I think the biggest difference is that there is a huge culture of support and that is all around, all ages… A lot of [freshmen] have come up to me and said they would like to make this the best season for us, and for only knowing us for a week that is pretty cool."
Under the guidance of coach
Mike Eckberg, who enters his second year with the team, SUNY New Paltz has turned up the intensity during preseason and has seen early results.
The Hawks trounced visiting Marywood University in its first preseason game Aug. 23, 4-1, and played a tight 2-1 contest against Hartwick College, which had defeated them, 3-0, during an exhibition game last year. And, despite falling to the Hawks this past weekend, SUNY New Paltz was encouraged by their effort and tactical work during the game.
"This year I am really excited about working with this group of girls," said Hawks defender
Raven Blake. "Everyone is so unique and they bring something so different to the field. I really think that each and every single girl on this team is going to make a difference."
Although SUNY New Paltz graduated seven seniors from last season's, 6-11-1, team, it brought in a wealth of talent with 11 newcomers. Combined with the 12 returners from last season, the Hawks have arguably the most depth it has had in years. They hope the talent on paper will translate on the field, as they aim to improve on last season's 2-6-1 conference record.
"I have really high expectations for my team this year," said Blake. "The way all the girls train in practice, really makes me feel and believe that we are going to be a really tough competitor this year."
SUNY New Paltz is hoping to continue its strong play in its first regular season game of the season Friday against Vassar College. Following four-straight games on the road against the Brewers, Smith College, Montclair State University and Skidmore College, the Hawks will host Bard College in their home-opener Sept. 12 on the North Turf Field.
